Rival pirates and militia groups have fought for control over a British couple held hostage for more than a week, an Islamic militia commander and a local elder said Monday. The couple were not injured in the fighting.

Meanwhile, a U.S.-flagged cargo vessel with 21 Americans aboard came under gunfire from suspected Somali pirates but managed to escape, a U.S. Navy spokesman said.

The European Union naval force says Somali pirates have hijacked a Thai fishing vessel north of the Seychelles islands.

The attack occurred 200 miles north of the Seychelles and 650 miles off the Somali coast.

Europe's anti-piracy task force says Somali pirates have seized a Panamanian-flagged ship off Africa's east coast.
A statement from the European Union's Operation Atalanta says six pirates boarded the MV Al Khaliq near the Seychelles islands early Thursday.

Somali pirates seize Saudi oil supertanker north of Mombasa

This was their biggest catch and the first time the Somali pirates infesting waters off the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden operated out in the Indian Ocean southeast of Kenya’s main port of Mombasa. The Saudi Sirius Star 319,430 dwt supertanker, the size of three football fields and loaded with Saudi oil heading for export markets, was captured some days ago with its 25 crew, one of whose members is British.

"The Sirius Star ... was seized by a group of armed men approximately 420 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia on Sunday," a Vela International spokesman said. "All 25 crew members on board are reported to be safe and the vessel is fully laden with crude oil. Vela Response Teams have been mobilized and are working to ensure the safe release of the crew members and the vessel."

While Saudi-owned television station Al Arabiya reported that the crew was released by the hijackers, both the U.S. Navy and Aramco said they had not received such information.

The ship was sailing under a Liberian flag and its 25-member crew includes citizens of Croatia, Britain, the Philippines, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
