Chile Tsunami Reaches Japan
The first tsunami from Chile has reached Japan, and Hawaii and other Pacific areas have been spared any significant damage. (Feb. 27)

In Japan, where hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from shorelines, the biggest wave following the magnitude-8.8 quake off Chile hit the northern island of Hokkaido. It was four feet high. There were no immediate reports of damage, though some piers were briefly flooded.
As the waves crossed the Pacific, they dealt populated areas — including the U.S. state of Hawaii — just glancing blows.

NATO said it hoped to secure the area in days, set up a local government and rush in development aid in a first test of the new U.S. strategy for turning the tide of the eight-year war. The offensive is the largest since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan.
The Taliban appeared to have scattered in the face of overwhelming force, possibly waiting to regroup and stage attacks later to foil the alliance's plan to stabilize the area and expand Afghan government control in the volatile south. 
One of the biggest helicopter assaults in British military history has been launched against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The Royal Welsh took the lead with their troops and Afghan partners flying at only 500ft above the desert, landing at a series of specified targets in the Nad-e-Ali area of Helmand under cover of darkness.
The Coldstream Guards, the Grenadier Guards and the Royal Welsh have all been on the ground testing the Taliban positions and trying to get the message out to local people that the battle is about restoring order and allowing normal government to develop.

U.K. Raises Terror Threat Level to ‘Severe’

Britain raised its terror threat alert to the second-highest level Friday, one of several recent moves the country has made to increase vigilance against international terrorists after a Christmas Day bombing attempt on a Europe-U.S. flight.
The threat level was raised from "substantial" — where it had stood since July to indicate a strong possibility of a terrorist attack — to "severe," meaning such an attack is considered highly likely.

A senior Obama administration official, speaking on background Friday to a group of reporters, characterized the Fort Hood shooting as "an act of terrorism," the first time an administration official has used that term in describing the massacre.
"To me, what he did certainly was using terror at its worst," the official said, defining terrorism as the use of violence to promote political beliefs. The official spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity in order to provide insight into the administration's discussions.

Netanyahu and six ministers had met three times on Sunday, and again on Monday morning. Army Radio reported that an afternoon gathering was planned. With the group divided over the proposed deal, Netanyahu could well bring the final decision to a vote in his full Cabinet.
