U.K. Raises Terror Threat Level to ‘Severe’

clipped from www.foxnews.com

Britain raised its terror threat alert to the second-highest level Friday, one of several recent moves the country has made to increase vigilance against international terrorists after a Christmas Day bombing attempt on a Europe-U.S. flight.

The threat level was raised from "substantial" — where it had stood since July to indicate a strong possibility of a terrorist attack — to "severe," meaning such an attack is considered highly likely. blog it

U.S. and Britain closed their embassies in Yemen

clipped from newsmax.com

The U.S. and Britain closed their embassies in Yemen on Sunday in the face of al-Qaida threats, after both countries announced an increase in aid to the government to fight the terror group linked to the failed attempt to bomb a U.S. airliner on Christmas.

The confrontation with al-Qaida's offshoot in Yemen has gained new urgency since the 23-year-old Nigerian accused in the attack, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, told American investigators he received training and instructions from the group's operatives in Yemen. President Barack Obama said Saturday that the al-Qaida offshoot was behind the attempt.

Hamas abusing European law to demand arrest of Israeli leaders for war crimes

clipped from www.timesonline.co.uk

The Islamist group Hamas is masterminding efforts to have senior Israeli leaders arrested for alleged war crimes when they visit European countries including Britain, a top Hamas official involved in the effort has told The Times.

The claim comes amid continuing diplomatic fallout after a British arrest warrant was issued last week against Tzipi Livni, who served as Foreign Minister during Israel’s Gaza offensive last winter. The warrant was withdrawn when it became clear that Ms Livni, now leader of the opposition, was not in the country. Its existence apparently prompted her to cancel a trip to attend a meeting in London. blog it

Iran seizes five British sailors

clipped from www.timesonline.co.uk

Diplomatic tension between Britain and Iran deepened yesterday with the news
that Tehran is holding five British sailors after their yacht apparently
strayed into Iranian waters.

The seized yacht, a 60ft Volvo, is owned by Sail Bahrain, a personal project
of King Hamad of Bahrain to promote his country’s seafaring ancestry. It had
only recently arrived from Southampton and was competing in Sail Bahrain’s
first offshore race.

“The boat may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters. The five crew
members, all British nationals, are still in Iran. All are understood to be
safe and well and their families have been informed.”
