U.S. Marine Corps Ends Role in Iraq

The U.S. Marine Corps wrapped nearly seven years in Iraq on Saturday, handing over duties to the Army and signaling the beginning of an accelerated withdrawal of American troops as the U.S. turns its focus away from the waning Iraqi war to a growing one in Afghanistan.

In Baghdad, meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden held talks with Iraqi leaders amid growing tensions over plans to ban election candidates because of suspected links to Saddam Hussein's regime.

The Marines formally handed over control of Sunni-dominated Anbar, Iraq's largest province, to the Army during a ceremony at a base in Ramadi — where some of the fiercest fighting of the war took place.

He’s the man who has to get the job done on the southern Afghanistan battlefront, described by top U.S. commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the main effort.

He did admit the task at hand is “…hard, no doubt about it,” but still, he was confident, even more forward-leaning than his bosses President Obama and McChrystal.

“I think you give the Taliban too much credit,” he told me.

“If we see somebody digging in an IED at the roadside he deserves to die,” Hodges told me, “and we’re going to kill him.”

The Rise of the Conservative Woman

conservativewomen One of the most revealing things about liberals is their insistence that only they can define a “real” minority or a “real” woman. In the eyes of the left, Clarence Thomas, Ken Blackwell and J.C. Watts will never be “real” black men. Likewise, Michele Bachmann, the smiling firebrand conservative congresswoman from Minnesota, and Sarah Palin, the popular former governor of Alaska, will never be “real” women.

How can they be? After all, these women don’t support abortion. In fact, Palin actually had the audacity to give birth to a baby with Down Syndrome. As one embarrassed liberal wag put it during last year’s presidential campaign, “If abortion isn’t for that, what is it for?”

These female leaders believe that marriage is a sacred bond between one man and one woman and anything else is a counterfeit. In the case of Bachmann and Palin, they have lived out their values by staying married to the same men for decades. MORE humanevents.com
