India’s nuclear plants on alert for possible terror attack

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that nuclear plants were put on alert Monday, Nov. 16 in the wake of the arrests in the United States of two suspects of complicity in the Mumbai attacks a year ago in which 171 were killed. David Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, both of Chicago, are held to have maintained ties with the al Qaeda-linked Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which was held responsible for those attacks.

US masses naval-air-marine might in Arabian Sea opposite India, Pakistan, Iran

Three US aircraft carriers with strike groups, task forces and nuclear submarines have piled up in the waters of the Arabian Sea opposite the shores of India, Pakistan and Iran, and in the Persian Gulf.

DEBKAfile's military sources report that the US began massing this formidable array of floating firepower at the outset of the Islamist terrorist attack on the Indian city of Mumbai last Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Tehran responded typically with a threat of retaliation should the Americans decide to use the Mumbai terrorist attack to hit Iran.

'Pakistan Link' To Mumbai Attacks

Indian media reported that the sole survivor of the group of gunmen has been identified as Mohammad Ajmal Qasam.
Officials believe he was one of 10 men who carried out the attacks.
The gunman, who is believed to be a Pakistani national, was captured alive.
He reportedly told interrogation officials that he and his group wanted to carry out "India's 9/11".
Pakistan has warned it would move troops to the Indian border if tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals spilled over.

A high Indian official said there was evidence that the terrorists came from Pakistan, without elaborating. Prime minister Singh has said elements in Pakistan may have been responsible for the attacks. Both India and Pakistan threatened to divert troops to their border if the tensions between them spill further. A Pakistani official said: "We'll take everything from the Western border (with Afghanistan) fighting Taliban and al Qaeda.

The investigation suggested the attackers planned to massacre 5,000 people, said R.R. Patil, deputy to the chief of Maharashtra state, without giving further details.
"Whenever they were under a little bit of pressure they would hurl a grenade. They freely used grenades," said J.K. Dutt, director general of India's elite commando unit.
Suspicions in Indian media quickly settled on the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, long seen as a creation of the Pakistani intelligence service to help wage its clandestine war against India in disputed Kashmir.
